Want to know how to create gorgeous vintage hair and makeup on a budget? How about learning how to do perfect victory rolls and symetrical wingtips? Yeah, i did too about 6yrs ago. But after hours and hours of researching online, and practicing and practicing, i now know all that and more.
When i first began to embrace my inner pinup, i immediately wanted to have perfect hair and makeup. I wanted victory rolls, wingtips, and a perfect red pout. But i had no idea how to do any of it...well except the red pout, red lips
are pretty easy as long as you have a steady hand. But i couldn't do a victory roll to save my life! I tried using a velcro roller and leaving it in, thinking this was how those gorgeous gals acheived the perfect, smooth rolls that stayed put all day long. But, sadly, this wasn't right, you could see the velcro roller. Hhhmmm???? Maybe they use a toilet roll a
nd leave THAT in? Nope. Didn't work either. GGRRRR!!! I began getting so incredibly frustrated, and as i'm pretty sure i have some form of OCD, i wasn't going to rest 'til i had these things down pat.
So, i jumped onto Amazon and grabbed myself a copy of a fabulous booked called "Vintage Hairstyling" and for some bizzare reason, the way the step-by-step guide has been written, it all just made sense to me. So, i spent a few more hours infront of the mirror and slowly, step-by-step learnt how to do victory rolls. Now, i can do them in my sleep! In fact, they're the most commonly asked for hairstyle from my clients...that and the Dita Von Tease loose fingerwave and curls.
I also needed those eyecatching wingtips. I tried applying the eyeliner (pencil mind you) a little longer than my eyelid line and then using the side of my finger to sweep it out and up. Yep, it looked pretty bad. Ok, so that's not how they do it. maybe you just follow your lash line then when you get to the outer edge you just flick your wrist? Nope. Couldn't get both side the same coz my wrist didn't ''flick" the same way both sides. Then one afternoon i came accross a YouTube tutorial that showed how to achieve the perfect wingtip. And low and behold it worked! I tried this technique several times and each time it resulted in perfectly symmetrical wingtips. HAZZAH!!!
There's was a lot of other 'vintage know how' i was eager to learn, and through alot of time spent researching and practicing, i can now proudly say i know how to do with ease.
My beautiful Nan also plays a HUGE part in my ever growing love affair with all things vintage. We spent alot of time together while i was growing up, watching old movies and early TV shows like 'I Love Lucy' and 'Bewitched'. She'd then tell me about how she used to dress and style her hair 'back in the old days'. She told me how they'd use lipstick as rouge when they ran out or couldn't afford it. I thought they literally drew circles on their cheeks like clowns with the lipstick...i know, not too bright. And she also taught me how to pincurl my hair. Granted i'd go to my room and retrace my steps Nan had just taught me and then secure my pincurl with one of my hair clips, you know the ones that snap closed. This left a fabulous unwanted crease through my curl, that was if i had enough patience to let the hair dry still pinned. Needless to say, now i know better.
So, with all this new found knowledge i vowed to help other women struggling to perfect their pinup look. I wanted to show others that with a few helpful hints (and possibly a couple cheats) they too wouldn't have to attempt wearing toilet rolls in their hair, or walk around with smudged eyeliner to pass it off as wingtips.
I've been a hair and makeup artist now for 2yrs, and have close to 10yrs experience in the beauty industry. I've been fortunate enough to work with some of the Gold Coast's best pinup and boudior photographers, filling my portfolio with amazing images of some of Australia's most beautiful women. And i'm not talking about professional models. Everyday women. And through meeting these women i learnt that i wasn't the only one trying ridiculous things to achieve a vintage look. So i created Sundae's School Pinup Class.
Sundae's School Pinup Classes are a great way to not only learn how to look like a vintage vixen without even styling your hair, but as a way of meeting other like minded women, share a laugh and have some very valuable "me" time.
I absolutely love teaching my classes, i get so much fulfillment out of each class that i drive home on a high. I hear the girls say "oh thankyou so much, i've been wanting to know how to do this for ages but had no idea where to start" and i'm like "YES that was me all those years ago!". I also get told i've help women come out of their shell and that because they now know how to do their hair and/or makeup they've got so much more self confidence, and that alone makes my job all worth while.
I also love being able to pass on some very interesting, and perhaps not very useful, trivia about how and why women did things during WWII. Like did you know that the poster we call Rosie The Riveter ISN'T in fact miss Rosie at all? It was miss quoted in a newspaper article in the 70s and from then on everyone just went with it. The REAL Rosie is a rather masculan looking red haired woman with feminine facial features, sitting holding a sandwich. She wears overalls and on her lap is a riveting gun and beside her sits her lunch pale that says "Rosie". See, interesting yet completely useless.
So if you too are struggling to with your pincurls, have lopsided wingtips or don't know your eyebrow brush from your elbow, then why not come along to the next Sundae's School Pinup Class There are two separate classes, makeup and hair. Both cost only $30/pp (or book in for both and it's just $50/pp) and go for 2.5hrs each. They are run in both Brisbane and on the lower Gold Coast. Thanks for reading and i hope to see you at my next class!
